Aigars’ Story

Birzgale’s Aigars Apinis is a several-time Paralympic World and European champion, who gained these achievements by the sheer will power and desire to prove that a life spent in a wheelchair, can also be fulfilling and interesting.
The optimistic Aigars Apinis was born and raised in the Ogre region of Birzgale district, where he lives to this day. When Aigars finished primary school, he enrolled at Ogre Vocational School (formerly known as Ogre Vocational Technical School, specialising in agriculture).
In primary school he played several sports, but never really considered any of them seriously. His athletic career began with disabled sports right here in Latvia. Janis Iluss (Jānis Iluss), president of the disabled club “Optimists”, got Aigars further involved in the movement. With the help of endless amounts of energy and optimism, Aigars’ path led him to Paralympic participant and trainer Aldis Supulnieks (Aldis Šūpulnieks), with his help came the opportunity to compete in the Paralympic Games.
Aigars only turned to sports in 1998, but in 2000 he was already representing Latvia in the Paralympic Games in Sydney, where he won his first medals.
In a 2005 survey published in newspaper “Ogres Ziņas”, Aigars was awarded the title “Person of the Year 2004” in Ogres district.
In a 2006 survey published in newspaper “Ogres Vēstis”, Aigars was awarded the title “Person of the Year 2006!”
In 2006, for the first time in disabled sports history, the Latvian Paralympic Committee (LPK) organised the “2006 Sport Laureate”, which honoured the best disabled athletes. Aigars Apinis was named the “2006 Athlete of the Year”.
Aigars’ main aim is to achieve excellent results in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games in autumn.
